Popular Sovereignty - Rule of Law or Rule of Man, The way the Government functions is by the will of the People. They either allow a Rule of Laws (Democracy, United States) or a Rule of Man (Communist Country for example)
Federalism - The power distribution in a Government. For example, Federalists want more power to the Government and Anti- Federalists don't want the Government to be too powerful
Separation of Powers - Separating the Powers of the Government into three separate branches, Legislative, Executive and Judicial. That way each branch can make a decision and with an agreement, its that more accurate if all three agree.
Checks and Balances - Balancing and Counterbalancing the Branches that way no branch has more power over the other. An example would be a 2/3 vote from Congress can override a Presidential Veto. Judicial Review for the Supreme Court, etc.
Judicial Review- A result of the Marbury vs. Madison court case, Judicial Review is 'reviewing' a law to see if it is allowed by the United States Constitution.
Limited Government - The limiting of what a Government could involve itself with to protect the liberty of Individual Citizens.
Bill of Attainder - Denying the right of Habeas Corpus and arresting someone without a trial. Capital Punishment
Elastic Clause - The power of Congress granted to pass any law 'necessary and proper'
Supremacy Clause - The Supremacy Clause states that the Constitution is the 'supreme law of the land'
Writ of Habeas Corpus - A person arrested must be given a reason they are being Arrested. They cannot be thrown in prison for no reason at all.
Ex Post Facto - One cannot be arrested for a crime that was committed before it was Illegal, Nor can they be arrested by being seen doing something Illegal, but the next day the act committed was legalized
Due Process - a Fair treatment through law and a court system
Expressed Powers - Powers written into the Constitution and are listed in the Constitution
Implied Powers - A power that is not necessarily 'written' into the Constitution, but is 'implied' that the power is there as many things change over time.
Full Faith and Credit- The States must recognize laws, records, legislative actions etc. of Every other state.
Privileges and Immunities - The Citizens of the United States have more privileges in law than saw an illegal immigrant and are protected under law compared to them.
Extradition - The act of a State or a Country to have a criminal in another region of another State or Country to be brought back to the location that they committed the crime in. Usually the State court if it is two separate states.
